How do I know if I am approaching a restricted zone in that area? I want to explore but not accidentally cross something I should not.

The Hilux Revo is a solid rig for a first desert drive. Key basics: air your tyres down to 18 to 20psi before hitting soft sand and re-inflate when back on road. Maintain momentum on dunes ; hesitation gets you stuck more than anything. Never drive at the top of a dune without knowing what is on the other side.

Google Maps offline is more useful than people expect for the main tracks. But for serious off-road Gaia GPS with UAE topo layers is the move. Worth the annual subscription.

Done it last season. The tracks east of Jebel Hafeet running parallel to the border are surprisingly technical ; much more than they look on a map. The rocky sections near the foothills require genuine low range driving.

Gutted I cannot make Friday. Anyone doing Saturday instead? Happy to bring the compressor and long kinetic.

265/65/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W or BFG AT KO2. Fits perfectly without touching the suspension. Will transform the truck for off-road without any other changes.

Garmin InReach Mini for satellite communication and SOS, paired with Gaia GPS on an iPad mini with downloaded offline maps. Best combination I have found. Waypoint sharing with the convoy in real-time works very well.

What tyre size and brand on the LC300 without rubbing? I want to keep it looking relatively stock.

Starting at 15psi, adjusting by feel. Al Madam entry. Al Qaa route is longer but we can vote on the day.

In with the Y61. Bringing kinetic rope and MaxTrax. What pressure are you starting on?

Welcome. Step one is to drive it off-road a few times first before spending anything on mods. Many first timers over-mod before they understand what the vehicle actually needs.

ARB twin is the benchmark for a reason. Had mine 6 years and it has never failed. If budget is tight the single CKMA12 is fine for one vehicle. Avoid anything without an auto-cutoff ; they cook in UAE heat.

Really helpful. What is the community view on compressors? The ARB CKMA12 seems to be the benchmark but the price is significant.

Satellite communicator if you are going remote. Personal PLB at minimum. In UAE the desert can turn difficult fast and cell coverage disappears 20 minutes from the paved road.

Non-negotiable: kinetic recovery rope 9 to 11 metre rated for your vehicle weight, two shackles minimum 4.75 tonne, and a snatch block. Those four items solve 90 percent of recoveries and weigh almost nothing.

For heavy items use Aramex or FedEx direct shipment. Shop and Ship gets expensive above 5kg per item. FedEx has been consistently reliable for auto parts in my experience with good tracking.

    4WD Authority

Really helpful. Is Shop and Ship cost effective for heavy items? King shocks are about 8kg each and I need four of them.

The Hatta Mountain Bike Park nearby is worth combining with a drive day. Morning 4×4 trails, afternoon at the bike park. Full day out.

Went with Safari on mine. Noticeably cleaner air intake readings after summer dust storms. Pays for itself in filter savings alone.

The 150 install requires cutting the A-pillar. I would recommend having a proper 4×4 shop do it unless you have done panel work before. Cost of re-spraying a botched cut is more than the labour.
