Y61 Patrol vs LC79 — settle the dune debate

Getting tired of the same argument in every WhatsApp group so let us settle it here properly. Y61 versus LC79 for serious UAE dune work. Both platforms are proven over decades, both have devoted fan bases. I have owned both. Give me your honest assessment — no brand loyalty, just real experience.

Y61 4.2 diesel is a beast in sand. The low range gearing is perfectly matched to dunes. Parts are everywhere in UAE and Oman. The only weakness is age — finding clean ones is getting harder.

79 series for build potential. Everything is available globally. The V8 diesel makes it a touring powerhouse. For pure dune character the Y61 has the edge but the 79 is more capable overall.

I have built both professionally. The 79 platform is fundamentally superior for modification — stronger axles, better global parts availability. Y61 is heritage and character. If money is no object, go 79.

My verdict after owning both: Y61 is the heart, 79 is the head. Want to feel connected to the desert and not overthink maintenance? Y61. Doing serious technical terrain and long distances? 79 every time.
