Going on my first guided drive next weekend. I see the term marshal used a lot but I do not fully understand the role. Do they just lead the convoy or is there more to it? And how do I assess whether the person leading actually knows what they are doing?

A marshal is responsible for safety and navigation. They know the route, they know recovery techniques, they communicate between front and back of the convoy, and they make the calls when things go wrong. A good marshal gets everyone home regardless of skill mix.

The sweep vehicle at the back is as important as the lead marshal. Good operators have experienced drivers at both ends and nobody falls behind the sweep. If you join a convoy without a sweep driver, ask about it.

Should I tell the marshal about my experience level before the drive?

Always. A good marshal wants to know your experience, your vehicle mods, and what recovery gear you carry. If they do not ask, volunteer the information anyway. It helps them position you appropriately in the convoy.
