The Route
The classic line runs from the Rustaq side of the Hajar mountains over the Al Nakhr plateau and down through Snake Canyon to the Nizwa plain. A series of rocky switchbacks define the ascent — sustained climbing on loose shale and exposed limestone — before the canyon becomes the defining feature of the day.
Snake Canyon
A narrow slot canyon barely wide enough for a standard 4×4 at its tightest points. Progress requires low-range first gear, careful tyre placement against the canyon walls, and patience. The payoff is passage through one of the most dramatic natural features in Arabia.
Difficulty and Safety
Hard. Experienced drivers must lead every convoy. Underbody protection is important — skidplate contact is regular on the ascent. Avoid during and after rain. Flash floods move through Oman’s wadi systems with little warning — know your exit points and check weather forecasts for the full Hajar watershed, not just the drive location.
