East of Dubai, where the city gives way to open desert, lies a network of sand corridors and flat desert plains offering excellent driving without expedition-level commitment. The Tawi Owaid to Al Madam sand trail and the Margham to Solar Park route both operate within this zone — accessible, rewarding, and consistently underrated.
Al Madam: The Abandoned Village
The Al Madam area is known for its abandoned village — a cluster of homes half-buried by encroaching sand, preserved by the desert that swallowed it. The atmosphere is striking and the photographic opportunities are obvious. The route from Tawi Owaid connects open desert flats with the sand corridors approaching Al Madam, mixing flat-out desert driving with more technical sand work as the terrain builds.
Margham to Solar Park
The Margham route heads south towards Dubai’s expanding renewable energy infrastructure, crossing open desert corridors with wide, fast sand. The landscape is flat and expansive — a different character from the mountain routes, but equally engaging at speed. Early morning light on the flat desert here is exceptional.

Both routes are accessible to a wider range of 4x4s and skill levels than the technical mountain or deep dune alternatives. Ideal for members building confidence and for days when a fast, open drive is what the group needs rather than sustained technical challenge.
