Oman in winter is one of the most rewarding 4×4 destinations in the region. Cooler temperatures, dramatic landscapes, and well-maintained tracks make it ideal for UAE residents looking for a proper adventure without getting on a plane. Here is how to plan it right.
When to Go
November through February is the sweet spot. Daytime temperatures in the mountains and wadis sit between 18°C and 26°C — perfect for driving with the windows down. Avoid Oman in summer; even the northern highlands get brutally hot.
Entry and Border Crossing
UAE residents with a valid residency visa can enter Oman through multiple land crossings. The Hatta border crossing is the most popular for 4×4 travellers heading to Musandam or the Hajar Mountains. Al Wajajah is the go-to for those heading to Muscat. Bring your vehicle registration, insurance valid in Oman, and ensure your 4×4 insurance covers cross-border use — most standard UAE policies do not.
Where to Drive
- Wadi Bani Khalid: Turquoise pools surrounded by palm trees and ancient rock. Best reached from Sur — plan a full day.
- Jebel Akhdar: The “Green Mountain” sits at over 2,000m. The road up is steep and technical — 4×4 mandatory, low range required.
- Wadi Shab: A slot canyon walk with a hidden cave and swimming pool. Park at the entrance and hike in — it is worth every step.
- Wahiba Sands: If you want big dunes without the UAE crowds, Wahiba delivers. Camp overnight and watch the stars.
- Musandam Peninsula: Drive the Khasab road along the fjords and camp at the edge of the Arabian Gulf.
Fuel and Recovery Planning
Fuel stations are spaced far apart in remote Oman. Carry a minimum 20 litres of spare diesel or petrol depending on your vehicle. A full recovery kit is non-negotiable — tow rope, hi-lift jack, MaxTrax, and a working air compressor. Tyre pressure management is everything on Oman’s mixed terrain.
Where to Stay
Wild camping is permitted in most areas away from towns and protected zones. For Jebel Akhdar, book one of the mountain lodges in advance — they fill up fast in winter. In Wahiba, a handful of simple desert camps offer dinner and a bed under canvas.
