The Moreeb Dune at Liwa stands at over 300 metres and is regularly cited as one of the tallest driveable sand faces in the world. The surrounding dune network — part of the Rub’ Al Khali, the Empty Quarter — is immense, remote, and completely unforgiving without proper preparation.
The Liwa Landscape
Liwa Oasis sits at the northern edge of the Empty Quarter. Drive south and the dunes grow rapidly from manageable to enormous. The sand is fine, soft, and extremely deep in the interdune corridors. Recovery situations are a normal part of the driving day. Convoy driving is mandatory — there are no exceptions.
Tyre Pressures
Drop to 12-14 PSI for Liwa — lower than most UAE venues. At these pressures, the tyre footprint widens significantly and the vehicle’s ability to float over soft sand improves dramatically. Carry a quality compressor for the return to tarmac.
Recovery Equipment
MaxTrax or equivalent sand boards are essential. A snatch strap is the absolute minimum. Two hi-lift jacks and a dedicated recovery vehicle in every convoy is the practical standard for serious Liwa driving.

The Liwa Date Festival and Moreeb Dune Festival in January bring competitions, markets, and camel events.
