Jebel Yanas Mountain Dirt Ascent: UAE’s Steepest 4×4 Climb

· August 6, 2026 · 5 min read
Jebel Yanas Mountain Dirt Ascent

Jebel Yanas in Fujairah is not widely known outside the UAE off-road community, which is part of its appeal. A steep, sustained dirt ascent to a mountain summit with panoramic views over the east coast and the Hajar interior — this is the kind of driving that reveals exactly what a 4×4 can and cannot do under load.

The Ascent

The approach track climbs sharply from the valley floor. Loose shale gives way to harder-packed dirt on the steeper sections, then reverts to rocky surface near the summit. The gradient is sustained — a long, consistent pull that loads the drivetrain differently from any UAE terrain. Wheel spin on loose lower sections is managed with careful throttle. The hard-packed sections demand traction control management and committed momentum.

At the Top

Summit views east to the Gulf of Oman and west across the Hajar range. On a clear morning, visibility extends to the horizon in every direction. The effort to reach the top is fully justified by what you find there.

The Descent

Engine braking in low-range second or first gear throughout. Do not attempt the descent in automatic drive mode — the sustained gradient requires positive engine braking to prevent brake fade. This is where mistakes happen if drivers relax after the climb.

Difficulty

Hard. Low-range 4×4 mandatory. Dedicated all-terrain tyres strongly recommended. Not for stock vehicles or first-time off-road drivers. Jebel Yanas features in the 4WD Authority Fujairah highlands series — one of the UAE’s most underrated mountain driving experiences.
