The Wahiba Sands, Sugar Dunes & Bar Al Hikman expedition is a comprehensive 5-day 1,750 km overland route across Oman’s most diverse desert landscapes. Beginning at the Bidbid junction along Route 15, the route enters the northern perimeter of the Wahiba Sands, navigating high linear sand dunes and deep interdunal corridors. The drive proceeds southward through technical dune crossings toward the coastal salt flats and wind-swept white sands of the Sugar Dunes near Al Khaluf. The final leg traverses the vast coastal wetlands of Bar Al Hikman, where drivers encounter soft sand tracks, mud flats, and tidal estuaries requiring careful line selection. Tire pressure adjustments are critical throughout the trip, dropping to 10-12 PSI for deep sand dunes and increasing slightly for rocky transit sections. Overnight camps are established in remote desert hollows and along pristine coastal beaches, requiring complete self-sufficiency for all five days on trail. Sustained driving in remote regions demands ample spare fuel capacity and reliable onboard air compressors for frequent pressure adjustments. Ensure vehicle cooling systems and air filters are fully serviced prior to departure to handle prolonged engine load in deep sand corridors. The ideal window for this multi-day desert expedition extends from December through March when daytime temperatures remain moderate.
