The Liwa Festival & Moreeb Deep Dunes expedition is a 3-day 620 km hard-rated drive into the largest dune systems in the UAE, timed to coincide with the Liwa International Festival held annually at the Moreeb dune. The convoy departs from Abu Dhabi via Route E11 and E65, crossing into the Rub al Khali edge where dunes frequently exceed 300 metres in height at the Moreeb face. Navigation through deep sand corridors demands careful route selection and constant momentum management to avoid burial in the steep interdunal bowls. Vehicle tyre pressures drop to 10-12 PSI for dune traversal, with compressors running at each rest stop. Day two involves a full traverse across the crescent dune arc southwest of Liwa town, passing through multiple bowl-and-ridge sequences that test steering precision at low speed. Day three returns via the northern gravel plains toward Abu Dhabi, crossing sections of packed sabkha that allow tyre reinflation and faster progress. All participants must carry adequate water reserves of at least 15 litres per person given the remote nature of the deep dune interior. Vehicles must be mechanically sound with no cooling faults, as sustained sand driving generates significant engine load. The Liwa crescent and Moreeb dune field are most accessible between December and February when temperatures remain below 30 degrees Celsius during daylight hours.
The AED 1,100 per-person fee covers full marshal-led convoy support, GPX routing, and on-trail recovery assistance. All participants receive a route debrief and access to the post-drive community report.
