The Fossil Rock to Camel Rock Dune Traverse is a 35 km moderate community drive through the Lahbab Desert between two of Dubai’s most recognisable geological landmarks. The route begins at Fossil Rock — a 200-million-year-old chert outcrop rising above the flat desert floor at coordinates approximately 24.93°N, 55.57°E — and tracks south-east through interconnected linear dune corridors toward Camel Rock, a wind-sculpted sandstone formation near the Lahbab Road. The dune system in this section features mid-sized parallel ridges averaging 12 to 15 metres in height with firm base sand that holds vehicle weight well in cooler morning conditions. Tyre pressures are dropped to 18-20 PSI at the briefing stop and remain low for the duration of the dune section. The drive takes approximately 4 hours at a relaxed pace, with a short stop at Fossil Rock for group photographs and a vehicle check before the main dune section begins. This is an ideal route for drivers with basic dune experience who want to build confidence on consistent, readable terrain before moving to harder trips. The route avoids the busy central Big Red area and provides a quieter dune experience on weekday departures. Drive November through February for best morning temperature conditions.
The AED 50 per-person fee covers full marshal-led convoy support, GPX routing, and on-trail recovery assistance. All participants receive a route debrief and access to the post-drive community report.
