The Dakar Rally Saudi Arabia Overland Caravan is a 12-day 2,400 km expedition running parallel to the Dakar Rally route across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The convoy departs Jeddah on the Red Sea coast and tracks north-east through the Hejaz mountains before dropping into the vast Nafud sand desert, navigating unmarked dune corridors that demand expert navigation and conservative fuel management across stages averaging 200 kilometres per day. Participants follow official Dakar spectator zones and rally bivouac areas at Al Qaisumah, Ha il, and Al Ula, providing close access to race operations while maintaining convoy safety protocols. The middle stages cross the Al Dahnaa sand belt, a narrow strip of high red dunes connecting the Nafud to the Rub al Khali. The final three days traverse the extreme southern sections through flat sabkha plains and scattered sandstone outcrops before culminating at the Riyadh finishing paddock. This expedition demands the highest mechanical preparation standard of any 4WD Authority drive — full servicing, underbody protection, dual battery systems, and minimum 100-litre fuel capacity are mandatory. Saudi eVisa, Carnets for Oman-registered vehicles, and a Saudi mobile SIM for navigation emergency services must be arranged two weeks prior to departure. The Dakar window in January is the only viable operational period for this route.
