The right apps on your phone turn a good off-road trip into a great one — and occasionally pull you out of a bad situation. Here are the tools serious drivers across the UAE and Oman use, and what each one is actually good for.
Navigation and Mapping
Gaia GPS is the gold standard for off-road navigation. It supports GPX file import, has excellent topographic map layers, and works fully offline once you have downloaded the area. For UAE and Oman, download the Middle East topo layers before you leave home. The premium subscription is worth it.
Maps.me is a reliable free alternative with good offline capability. It lacks the GPX flexibility of Gaia but is excellent for general navigation in remote areas with no signal.
Google Maps offline covers the gap for urban navigation and finding fuel stations — download your region before departure.
GPX Files and Route Sharing
Wikiloc is the best community platform for sourcing GPX tracks. Search by region and filter by activity type to find verified 4×4 routes across Oman, the UAE highlands, and Musandam. Always read the comments — conditions change seasonally and the community keeps track reports current.
Once you have a GPX file, import it into Gaia GPS or any compatible navigation app. Follow the track, not the road line.
Recording Your Trips
Gaia GPS also records your track automatically while you drive — you get a full log of your route, elevation profile, and speed history at the end of every trip. Export it as a GPX or KML and share it with your convoy group.
OsmAnd is a powerful open-source alternative with strong recording features and customisable map layers. It has a steeper learning curve than Gaia but is completely free.
Weather and Flash Flood Alerts
Windy is the best weather visualisation tool for outdoor travel. Before heading into a wadi, check the rainfall radar for the upstream mountains — you cannot see a flash flood forming but Windy can show you the storm that will cause it.
UAE weather apps (National Centre of Meteorology) provide localised alerts. Install it and enable notifications when travelling in the UAE.
Communication and Safety
WhatsApp is the de facto convoy communication tool in the region. Create a group for your convoy and share live location throughout the trip. For solo travel in areas without signal, a satellite communicator with the Garmin Earthmate app paired to an inReach device is the most reliable safety net available.
No app replaces experience, judgement, or a solid recovery kit. But the right combination of tools means you spend less time lost and more time exploring. Download, set up, and test everything at home before you hit the trail.
