The Hatta area is well known for mountain biking trails and the Hatta Dam. What fewer people know is that the surrounding Hajar foothills contain an extensive network of gravel mountain tracks accessible only by 4×4 — and that the Huwaylat to Hatta loop is the finest of these routes.
The Route
Starting from Huwaylat in Dubai’s eastern hinterland, the track climbs into the mountains via gravel roads maintained for utility access rather than recreation. The surface varies — smooth graded sections alternate with rocky technical stretches, and the driving character changes frequently enough to stay consistently engaging. The route passes through small mountain villages, dry riverbeds, and exposed ridgelines with long views in every direction.
The Hatta Connection
The route terminates near Hatta, offering a natural break at the heritage village before the return. Coming into Hatta via the mountain tracks rather than the main highway gives an entirely different sense of the area’s geography — the town emerges as a relief from the rugged terrain surrounding it.
Why it Works
Accessible adventure driving: challenging enough to require a proper 4×4, varied enough to stay interesting throughout, and close enough to Dubai for a comfortable day return. A viable option even with a late start.
