The Pink Rocks of Sharjah’s interior are exposed sandstone formations in shades of rose, salmon, and terracotta that glow at dawn and dusk with a colour intensity that seems almost too vivid to be natural. Combined with the Badayer ridge run, they form one of the UAE’s most photogenic off-road routes.
The Formations
The colour comes from iron oxide in the sandstone. The formations emerge from the desert floor in dramatic clusters, some reaching 20-30 metres. Driving through them requires care — the rock edges are sharp and tyre punctures on exposed faces are common. Walk the tight passages and pick the cleanest line before committing.
The Terrain
Rocky desert interspersed with sandy corridors. The surface ranges from solid sandstone — grippy and fast in open sections — to soft drift sand in sheltered valley pockets. The ridge sections involve moderate climbs with good views across the surrounding desert floor.
Badayer
The Badayer area extends into a wider network of ridges and valleys. Our route follows the most scenic line through the key formations before returning via lower ground. The full network rewards multiple visits — the same terrain looks entirely different in different light conditions.
Photography and Difficulty
This is the UAE’s best drive for photography. Golden hour light on the pink formations is extraordinary. Difficulty: moderate. Standard-clearance 4×4 with all-terrain tyres and basic recovery equipment is sufficient. Drone footage here — where regulations permit — is consistently spectacular.
