The Wahiba Sands — officially Sharqiya Sands — are one of the most beautiful deserts in the Arabian world. Compact, corrugated red dunes rise to 100 metres in places. The sand texture here is finer and more consistent than Liwa or Sweihan. The dunes have steeper faces and require faster, more committed driving than most UAE drivers are accustomed to.
What Makes Wahiba Different
UAE drivers who arrive applying the same technique they use in Sweihan or Al Madam are regularly humbled. Fine sand, steep slip faces, and unpredictable soft patches demand reading ahead and committing early. This challenge is exactly what makes the Wahiba a destination drivers return to repeatedly.
Bar Al Hikman
The eastern edge of our Wahiba crossing terminates at Bar Al Hikman, a flat tidal peninsula projecting into the Arabian Sea. The contrast with the dune interior is dramatic — vast mudflats, flamingos in season, and an overwhelming sense of space. The coast is completely undeveloped. Return via Sur or overnight before retracing the route.
Practical Notes
Cross from UAE via Ibri or the coastal route through Quriyat. Bring sufficient fuel — no services in the Wahiba interior. GPS track essential; the dune landscape looks identical in every direction. Tyre pressures: 12-15 PSI in the deeper sections. Full recovery kit with sand boards required.
