Salma Plateau Overland: Oman’s High-Desert Wilderness

The Salma Plateau sits above 2,000 metres in the Al Hajar mountains of northern Oman – accessible only to properly equipped 4×4 vehicles willing to commit to a sustained technical ascent. At the top, a vast windswept highland opens with panoramic views across the mountain ranges, remote and utterly unlike anything in the UAE.

The Ascent

The climb is the defining challenge. The track rises through rocky switchbacks, each requiring careful wheel placement to avoid dropping off narrow ledges. Loose shale on the steeper sections demands patient throttle management. High-lift suspension is a significant advantage. A prepared Land Cruiser 70/200 or Patrol Y62 with all-terrain tyres is the appropriate vehicle.

On the Plateau

Once the climbing is done, the terrain opens into rolling highland. The isolation is complete – no infrastructure, no mobile coverage, and genuine wilderness. Night temperatures drop to near-zero in winter months. Camping here is one of the most rewarding overnight experiences available to UAE-based off-roaders.

What to Bring

Full recovery kit, camping gear rated to 5 degrees Celsius, a minimum of 20 litres of water per vehicle, GPS track loaded before departure, and emergency communication. Self-sufficiency is not optional in terrain this remote.

The Salma Plateau Overland is part of the 4WD Authority multi-day expedition calendar. It is a drive that separates those who have genuinely explored Oman from those who have simply visited it.
