The Musandam Peninsula is Oman’s northernmost exclave and one of the most spectacular off-road destinations reachable from the UAE. The Limah Mountain Run rewards skilled drivers with views of the region’s famous khors — fjords carved into sheer limestone — from trails clinging to ridge lines hundreds of metres above the Arabian Gulf.
Getting There
Drive north from Ras Al Khaimah and cross at the Tibat border post. Bring vehicle registration, insurance valid in Oman, and passports for all passengers. Factor 30-60 minutes each way. Khasab is the starting point for mountain trails.
The Route
From Khasab, the trail climbs through Limah village and beyond on shale surfaces with off-camber sections and narrow ledge trails. The descent via a different line reveals new angles on the khor scenery below. Technical from start to finish.
Vehicle Requirements
Low-range 4×4 mandatory. Tyre pressures down to 18-20 PSI for rocky sections. Underbody protection strongly recommended — limestone edges contact skid plates regularly. High-clearance standard SUVs manage in dry conditions; anything less will not.
Recovery and Safety
Mobile coverage drops in the mountains. Carry a satellite communicator, full recovery kit, hi-lift jack, snatch strap, MaxTrax, and water beyond your planned duration. Convoy driving is not optional.
Best Time
October through March. Surfaces deteriorate significantly after rain — check conditions before crossing the border. This is one of the standout drives on the 4WD Authority calendar. If you have never crossed into Musandam by land, put this first on your list.
