Sand driving basics — terrified of getting stuck

Going on my first desert drive with a group next month. Toyota Hilux Revo on standard tyres. The thought of getting bogged seriously worries me. What are the key basics I need to know before I go? And is the Hilux suitable or should I be in something more capable?

The Hilux Revo is a solid rig for a first desert drive. Key basics: air your tyres down to 18 to 20psi before hitting soft sand and re-inflate when back on road. Maintain momentum on dunes — hesitation gets you stuck more than anything. Never drive at the top of a dune without knowing what is on the other side.

What is the minimum pressure I should go to? Scared of damaging the rims.

16psi is safe on standard AT tyres on a Hilux. You will not damage the rims at that pressure. Below 12psi without bead locks risks the tyre debeading which is a serious problem in remote desert. Do not go below 14psi until you know your setup well.
