Planning to explore the Al Ain border area tracks that run towards the Oman mountain foothills on the UAE side. Not crossing, just using the UAE side tracks. Anyone done this recently? Looking for the best approach from Al Ain and approximate difficulty rating.

Done it last season. The tracks east of Jebel Hafeet running parallel to the border are surprisingly technical — much more than they look on a map. The rocky sections near the foothills require genuine low range driving.

The views from the ridge above the date palm valleys are spectacular. Go in the cooler months — October to March. Summer is brutal out there with no shade.

How do I know if I am approaching a restricted zone in that area? I want to explore but not accidentally cross something I should not.

Stick to established tracks and use a GPS that shows the UAE border clearly. If a track starts looking like it crosses into Oman territory, stop and turn around. When in doubt, do not proceed.
