Switching from paper maps and instinct to proper digital navigation. Looking for recommendations specifically for UAE off-road. Need topographic layers, waypoint sharing between convoy vehicles, and solid offline capability. Budget is not the constraint, want the best setup that actually works here.

Garmin InReach Mini for satellite communication and SOS, paired with Gaia GPS on an iPad mini with downloaded offline maps. Best combination I have found. Waypoint sharing with the convoy in real-time works very well.

For UAE specifically OkMap with custom topo layers is the most detailed I have found. Takes time to set up but the coverage is exceptional. Hema Explorer app for international overlanding beyond UAE.

Google Maps offline is more useful than people expect for the main tracks. But for serious off-road Gaia GPS with UAE topo layers is the move. Worth the annual subscription.

Thanks all. The Garmin InReach pairing sounds interesting for convoy use. Do all drivers need the device or just the lead vehicle?
khalid.alshamsi
Just the lead and sweep vehicles at minimum. InReach allows tracking sharing so all drivers can see each other on the Earthmate app using just a phone. Only the lead and sweep need the physical device.
