Putting together a proper recovery kit for my first serious desert season. Done the basic research but want real input from experienced UAE drivers. What does your standard kit look like and what is the one piece of gear you would never leave behind on a desert day?

Non-negotiable: kinetic recovery rope 9 to 11 metre rated for your vehicle weight, two shackles minimum 4.75 tonne, and a snatch block. Those four items solve 90 percent of recoveries and weigh almost nothing.

Add a hi-lift jack and a proper base plate for soft sand, plus a real shovel not a folding camping one. And tyre deflators with a quality compressor — these get forgotten until you need them most.

Satellite communicator if you are going remote. Personal PLB at minimum. In UAE the desert can turn difficult fast and cell coverage disappears 20 minutes from the paved road.

Really helpful. What is the community view on compressors? The ARB CKMA12 seems to be the benchmark but the price is significant.

ARB twin is the benchmark for a reason. Had mine 6 years and it has never failed. If budget is tight the single CKMA12 is fine for one vehicle. Avoid anything without an auto-cutoff — they cook in UAE heat.
