The Ultimate Guide to Jebel Jais: UAE’s Highest Off-road Adventure

Jebel Jais, the highest peak in the UAE at 1,934 metres, is more than a scenic drive up a paved road. The Hajar Mountains surrounding it hide some of the most technically demanding 4WD tracks in the country, rewarding those with the right vehicle and the right knowledge with views that stretch all the way to Oman.

Getting There

The mountain sits inside the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, roughly 100 km from Dubai. Head north on Emirates Road (E611), follow the signs for RAK City, then turn east on the Jebel Jais road. Most of the off-road trails branch off before the summit viewpoints, beginning around the 25-km mark.

What to Expect on the Tracks

The terrain alternates between loose limestone scree, embedded rock steps, and narrow ridge lines with little room to manoeuvre. Approach angles are steep, and a long-travel suspension setup is a significant advantage. A minimum ground clearance of 220 mm is strongly recommended. Expect rocky descents that demand careful tyre placement and controlled throttle.

Must-do Tracks

The Jais Wadi Loop takes about three hours at a steady pace and drops into a dry riverbed flanked by towering cliffs. The North Face Line is for experienced drivers only: several sections require spotting and the trail ends at a ledge with an unmarked drop. Always research current trail conditions ; flash floods can reshape the terrain overnight.

Essential Preparation

Pack at minimum two spare tyres, a high-lift jack, shackles, and a snatch strap. Mobile signal is intermittent. Brief a contact at home with your planned route and expected return time. Start early ; summer temperatures at altitude can still exceed 35°C by noon, and afternoon thermals reduce visibility with dust haze.
